Todd Boehly Hits Back: Chelsea Co-Owner Responds Strongly to English Media Criticism in Revealing New Interview
Todd Boehly, one of the key figures behind the current ownership of Chelsea Football Club, has recently responded to his critics in the British press, delivering a pointed rebuttal.
Boehly, alongside partners Mark Walter, Hansjorg Wyss, and the investment firm Clearlake Capital, successfully acquired the London-based team back in March 2022.
This followed the forced sale of the club by its previous owner, Roman Abramovich, who had been impacted by governmental sanctions.
Abramovich’s departure was triggered by the UK government’s actions, spearheaded by then-Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
These actions stemmed from Abramovich’s close relationships with Russian President Vladimir Putin, leading to the freezing of his assets in response to Russia’s full-scale military intervention in Ukraine, a conflict that remains ongoing.

This series of events created the opportunity for Boehly and his group to take over Chelsea. His prior attempt to purchase the club in 2019, with a bid of $3 billion, had been unsuccessful.
However, a consortium led by the American executive ultimately succeeded, paying £4.25 billion to finalize the acquisition.
This takeover received the official endorsement of the British government on May 25, 2022, and the transaction was completed on May 30, marking the end of Abramovich’s nearly two-decade tenure as owner.

Addressing criticism, he commented to the Australian Financial Review that while his family may be affected, he personally dismisses it as uninformed commentary.
He further quipped about the media’s perception, suggesting the British press consistently emphasizes their own intelligence in contrast to his perceived lack thereof.
Boehly expressed optimism regarding Chelsea’s future development, emphasizing the team’s long-term potential and his anticipation for their continued evolution.
He painted a picture of sustained growth and improvement under the current direction, signaling a hopeful outlook for the club.
Chelsea’s first year under Boehly’s leadership was a disappointment, ending with a lowly 12th-place finish in the Premier League.

Boehly has stated that a key objective is to expand the club’s international appeal. He believes that “growing a worldwide supporter base naturally leads to increased revenue.”
Chelsea already possesses a significant global following, which experienced substantial growth after Abramovich’s initial acquisition in June 2003.
Under Abramovich, the club achieved considerable success, winning five Premier League titles, two Champions League titles, and two Europa League titles, establishing themselves as a major force in European football.
As of early 2024, Chelsea Football Club enjoys a significant presence and enjoys a massive online audience, estimated to be around 136.7 million people, across popular social media sites like X, Facebook, and Instagram.
This demonstrates the club’s widespread appeal and engagement with fans worldwide.
Following the mandated disposal of Chelsea Football Club by Abramovich in 2022, the substantial £2.5 billion generated from the transaction is still held in a UK financial institution.
Abramovich had expressed his desire for these funds to provide assistance to anyone affected by conflict, however, the UK government maintains that the money should be dedicated exclusively to initiatives designed to alleviate human suffering.
“The current administration is actively engaged in efforts to facilitate the swift allocation of the funds acquired from the Chelsea FC sale towards philanthropic endeavors aimed at aiding the people of Ukraine,” a representative from the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office stated this week.
The funds, generated from the sale, are presently inaccessible as they are held securely within a British financial institution.
This temporary measure is in place as preparations are being finalized to create a new, impartial charitable organization.
This foundation will be specifically designed to oversee the responsible administration and allocation of these funds.
Furthermore, representatives of the British government are actively engaged in ongoing dialogue with those representing Mr. Abramovich, as well as consulting with specialists and international collaborators. They are committed to intensifying their efforts to find a satisfactory resolution to this matter.
The established stance of the UK government, which remains unchanged regardless of the Labour Party’s victory in the previous national election, firmly dictates that the sole permissible use of these financial resources is to provide humanitarian aid and support to those affected by the situation in Ukraine.
