Should Enzo Maresca consider benching Cole Palmer? Right now, he is the least effective player on Chelsea...

Image
Enzo Maresca stated that Cole Palmer's lack of goals was a “mental” problem before the match, emphasizing it was unrelated to him, his strategies, or a playing style that has caused Chelsea to fall from title contenders to Champions League qualification outsiders now firmly established at Stamford Bridge.  "Absolutely, it's all in the mind." I don’t believe it’s tactical, nor do I believe it’s technical, since Cole remains the same player who scored for us this season. The type of football we play is the same as before. The manager remains the same. The club is identical. “Everything remains the same for Cole, and Cole remains unchanged.”  Palmer is evidently experiencing a deficiency in self-assurance. For an extended period during this dry spell, it seemed only a matter of time until he would conclude it, yet the confidence that characterized his exceptional football in his first season and a half at Chelsea now seems to have almost vanished, leading to the astonish...

Who are the leading scorers in 2025? Dembele leads Mbappe by five points

Viktor Gyokeres finished as the leading scorer of 2024, concluding the year with an astonishing total of 52 goals.

Remaining with Sporting for the time being, Gyokeres is anticipated to be a contender once more in 2025, although Erling Haaland may seek to reclaim his title, and Kylian Mbappe has begun the year strongly.

The standards: Every club goal across all tournaments for teams in the top 10 leagues of Europe. Minutes per goal serves as your tiebreaker when players have the same number of goals scored, which, of course, many do at this relatively early point.

10. Sem Steijn [Twente] – 14 Goals

The top scorer in the Eredivisie is an uncapped Dutch player from Twente, having netted 23 league goals this season—six more than he scored last season, which was already 11 more than the year prior. We still cannot correctly spell his name the first time.

9. Harry Kane [Bayern Munich] – 16 Goals

Once more, the Englishman has steadily netted goals, and it will certainly bring him a league winner’s medal, although his 11 Champions League goals did not take Bayern beyond the quarter-finals.

8. Serhou Guirassy [Borussia Dortmund] – 16 Goals

A hat-trick against Barcelona was ultimately futile, although it elevated him to 13 Champions League goals for the season. He has been somewhat less productive in the Bundesliga, with a four-goal performance against Union Berlin obscuring some fairly ordinary statistics.

7. Youssef En-Nesyri [Fenerbahçe] – 17 Goals

Former Sevilla forward and West Ham prospect En-Nesyri is excelling under Jose Mourinho in Turkey, netting four goals in the Europa League group stage and one in each leg of the play-off triumph over Anderlecht. Scoring four goals in the Turkish Cup and ranking just below Krzysztof Piatek in the Super Lig, a player is performing exceptionally well.

6. Robert Lewandowski [Barcelona] – 17 Goals

At 36, he continues to start and score for Barcelona, managing to net 25 goals in 29 La Liga matches in 2024/25 as part of an exceptional attack with Raphinha and Lamine Yamal. Two goals against Borussia Dortmund essentially secured Barca a place in the Champions League semi-finals.

5. Victor Osimhen [Galatasaray] – 17 Goals

With minimal expectation for his Napoli career to be revived, Osimhen has at least utilized his loan in Turkey as a showcase, scoring a league-high 20 goals, which features a hat-trick versus Antalyaspor. He likely isn't too skilled to become part of Manchester United this summer, but they can't afford him.

4. Kylian Mbappe [[Real Madrid] – 19 Goals

Mbappe eventually began competing at an elite level for the European champions, although these goals might ultimately yield nothing. The hat-trick against Manchester City was enjoyable, indeed. A brace against Villarreal brought his total to 20 La Liga goals for the season, while another goal helped Real come from behind to defeat Leganes. However, he is experiencing a kind of short drought, having scored no goals yet this April.

3. Vangelis Pavlidis [Benfica] – 20 Goals

Few strikers can say they’ve netted a hat-trick against Barcelona, but in the end, the goals versus Monaco in the Champions League play-offs were the most crucial. The European journey has concluded, yet he is thriving in the Portuguese football league, netting 13 goals in his last 11 matches.

2. Viktor Gyokeres [Sporting] – 20 Goals

The previous year’s winner achieved double digits for 2025 by scoring his 24th and 25th goals in the Portuguese league season. He currently has 34 league goals, featuring four hat-tricks. Surely he is far too talented to sign with Manchester United this summer…

1. Ousmane Dembele (PSG) – 24 Goals

Dembele netted in the initial eight matches PSG played in 2025, frequently more than once, tallying five against Brest and three against Monaco, having encountered both in two distinct competitions. He then somehow failed to score in a 7-0 victory against Brest but contributed one from the substitutes in the Coupe de France as PSG achieved the same ridiculous scoreline once more.

A goal and an assist in his one-hour performance leading to a 4-1 victory against Lille was significant because, in addition to being his 18th goal of 2025, it marked his very first assist. He couldn't get around Alisson and Liverpool, but he recovered with an injury-time double against Rennes before scoring in the second leg at Anfield.

The goals keep on arriving; he currently has 32 goals this season. He is currently a true candidate for the Ballon d’Or.
