Two Manchester United transfer choices revealed by merciless Nottingham Forest after baffling £90m decisions

Manchester United’s decision to sell Anthony Elanga for £15m while rating Alejandro Garnacho at £70m illustrates the kind of errors that define their transfer missteps.  Manchester United are terrible at signings. That is no surprise. Their terrible history of post-Ferguson acquisitions is painfully familiar. However, they are arguably inferior in every facet of player sales, and insufficient emphasis is placed on how that disastrous failure has been more persistently harmful than subpar recruitment to their prospects for a significant rebuild.  They have never earned over £100m in a single season from player sales (four Premier League teams achieved this in just one season). They are the sole Premier League club whose highest sale happened prior to 2011. They still consider David Beckham's transfer to Real Madrid in 2003 as their fourth-biggest sale ever, and two players ahead of him – Angel Di Maria and Romelu Lukaku – were sold at a loss compared to their initial signing fe...

Chelsea's late attempt to hijack the Mathys Tel transfer fell short before Tottenham secured the player.

• On the day of the deadline, Tel completed the loan transfer to Tottenham.

• Dedicated supporters According to reports, Chelsea's late push failed.

• The agreement includes the possibility of permanently signing the Bayern Munich forward this summer.

According to reports, Chelsea's late attempt to sabotage Mathys Tel's loan move to Tottenham Hotspur on transfer deadline day was unsuccessful.

The Blues have pursued Tel's signature for a long time and took swift action when the young forward opted to depart Bayern Munich late in the winter window, but reports suggest Tel rejected a transfer to Chelsea due to concerns about not receiving ample playing time under Enzo Maresca.

Tottenham, having unsuccessful initial efforts to persuade Tel to make a permanent move, agreed to bring the 19-year-old on loan with an option for a summer transfer, but L'Equipe reports they needed to resist a late offer from Chelsea.

It is reported that, just prior to Tel getting on the flight to London, Chelsea reached out to his agents again, only to be turned down by the French striker.

The scenario evokes vivid recollections of Chelsea's signing of Brazilian striker Willian in 2013. The winger, nearing a comeback to Fulham, was brought over by Tottenham and even had a medical with the team before a surprising turn of events allowed Chelsea to secure his signing.

For Tel, the opportunity to sign a temporary contract was crucial. He desires to have control over his own fate and still wishes to influence his next step, even if Tottenham decide to activate their purchase option, rumored to be approximately £49m.
